Make Your Own Antique

Don’t worry, I’m not advocating forgery, just suggesting a bit of creativity! After all, there are lots of charity shops with very dull 1970s pieces of bedroom and living room furniture; coffee tables, bookshelves and storage units that most self-respecting people wouldn’t be seen dead with in their homes. I often wonder who would actually buy these items and use them as they are. Maybe landlords with soulless student flats to furnish or homeless shelters perhaps.
However, you can pick up these pieces of cheap wooden furniture and then use them as a base to create your own works of art. Embellish them with pictures or trinkets that you pick up at flea markets and jumble sales or add your own pictures and patterns with paints and stencils. You can come up with your own designs or copy ones from history – and that’s where the idea of creating your own antique comes in!
Obviously, they’re not going to really be antiques, but copies of arts and crafts or art deco patterns. The best thing about creating it yourself is that you can take the bits you like the most from each era and ditch the bits you don’t like. Or even mix styles from different time periods. There are no rules if you’re using odds and ends to manufacture your own personalised piece of furniture.
If you need more inspiration then there are no shortage of antiques fairs and auctions in towns every weekend. You might not be able to afford to buy any of the authentic pieces they have on sale, but there’s nothing to stop you taking away one of the free catalogues, complete with very clear, colour photographs for you to copy. Just don;t try and sell them on yourself or you might get into trouble with the fraud police!
