I know that rummaging through the local antique stores may not sound like a treat to everyone, but for me it really is a great way to relax and escape from all those day to day worries. I find that when I am in these quirky little antique stores, among all these unusual and interesting objects that are filled with history, I finally feel comforted.

Antique shops always have this musty old smell to them which makes me fell myself again, even if my whole world is falling apart. They are also always run by intriguing characters that natter away to you for hours, recalling times from days gone by and quite frankly I love it!!!

There is nothing more exciting than searching through piles of old stuff to discover a real treasure underneath it all. I have found so many great items in antique shops that make my home so much more interesting to look at and be in, I just can’t understand those people who say antique shops are filled with a load of old rubbish.

Whenever I am feeling down, I pick myself up and head off to the local antique shop, and once there the rest takes care of itself. The past times, the memories and the nostalgia, nothing could ever beat a good antique shop!

David Lucas, the one who has been running his antique store, aptly named 88 antiques for over 30 years now and he even lives above the store. He has always liked antique furniture and although today’s modern trends tend to sway what he has in stock, he does keep it mainly to his own personal tastes and preferences.

In antique collection, desire is an important factor. The reason collectors desire an item may be because of age, scarcity, beauty and other forms of personal connections. Antique collection is growing with the emergence of several markets. The market is spreading everywhere including the internet. Now you see, people both young and old, going in from one shop to the other. Antique collection is for people in different economic classes of the society. Rich people usually collect expensive classics because they can afford it. However, you don’t have to be rich to collect but your affluence definitely affects what you collect.

Is this you? You may have been on a painting holiday and learned how to create dimension and scale, but does that make you an expert? Sadly not. Here are a few ways to check if the picture you have seen is actually a fake:

Does it feel heavy enough to be that old? Old canvases were generally much heavier than new, cheaper canvases and that is a fact.

4. What is the piece’s history? Where did it come from, and who did the gallery get it from? Don’t accept a vague distant idea of where it came from. Ideally you want a full and proper idea of this, or else you won’t be buying the picture. Make this very clear and explain that you will not be duped!

• Piccadilly Market: This place sells antiques on Tuesdays from ten in the morning until six at night. Also from Wednesday to Saturday there is an arts and crafts market. You can find various kinds of vintage ornaments, glass, ephemera along with many arts and crafts items. The dealers here come and go, so you are never sure of what you can find here.
• Grays Antiques Market: This is an indoor market that has many choices when it comes to antiques. There are dealers that specialize in dolls, glass, vintage clothing, rare books and several other antiques. This is located just off of Oxford Street, which has many excellent places to shop. This market is open Monday through Friday from ten to six; they are also open on Saturdays from eleven until five.
• Bermondsey Market: This market is known as the New Caledonian Market and if you come to London, you must come here. It is across the river and near the site of an ancient abbey. This market is open very early on Fridays from six in the morning until noon. You are sure to find good deals when the dealers first set up between four and five in the morning.
• Camden Passage: This place is both a passage and an antiques market. It is open on Wednesday and Saturday morning. You will find many dealers with large amounts of special shops. It has been a famous antiques market since the 1960 and presently has more than hundred dealers with a huge line of expertise. You can find it close to the Angel Tube Stop.

Do not be afraid to bargain with the dealers because bargaining is part of the tradition. Enjoy your time in these markets and find the best antique for you.

Identifying an authentic antique is a challenge in itself partly, just like identifying a dvd duplication, due to the fact that the supply is diminishing. Unfortunately, there is not one simple answer to determine real from fake as there isn’t one single book that can help and it also depends on the type of antique you are looking for but there are certain things you can look out for:

1. Wooden Furniture: Check the dovetail drawer joint to see if it was cut by hand or by machine. It is quite simple to tell the difference at a glance as the machine cut piece will have evenly spaced pins that look identical whereas the hand cut joint is finer and not usually perfectly spaced.

2. Antique Mirrors: First, look at the veneer of the mirror. If it has a wooden frame, remove a screw which should be homemade. The spacing will not be even and the slots will be off-centre. The glass will be quite thin and wavy with a grayish tinge to it.

The best thing would be to contact a reputable appraiser to evaluate the piece you are interested before you buy, mainly to check the authenticity which requires much research but also to ensure you pay the right price. Happy hunting!
