There are really only two ways of approaching an antiques show or fair – those being like a nervous amateur or a seasoned pro. Needless to say, there are no prizes for guessing which of the two will always take home the best of the booty, so give the following tips a try and always side with the latter:

Timing, Timing, Timing – Timing is everything as an antiques show and you need to be willing to put in the hours. True, the best of all that is on offer will be showcased first thing before being snapped up, but the best deals of all can be struck when the dealers are just about to pack up and leave.

· Recon – Do a full lap or two before committing to any purchase, as those lovely new kitchen cabinets you’re just itching to pick up might be massively cheaper a few stalls around the corner.

· Beware of Copies etc. – A bit of an extension of the above, just because you’ve found something that appears to be a one-off at first glance doesn’t mean it really is. Once anything of interest has been found, take note of how common it is across other stalls to help assess whether or not it really is a worthy purchase.

· Go with Snooping Instincts – Look, touch and ask as many questions as you can possibly think of about anything you might be interested in. By doing so, you might uncover stories and little gems of knowledge that make any find even more valuable – or perhaps cancel it out as a red-herring.

· Be Prepared – Expect to cover a few miles so wear comfortable shoes, don protection from the elements in case of outside stalls and remember at all time that most stalls will NEVER accept checks or credit cards for any purchases.

At Sablon Antiques Market we pride ourselves in providing you with the best information on antiques of all types – what to look for and where to find them. Today I would like to take you through a few of the cabinets on the market – a classic collectible type of furniture we all like to adorn our property. My particular favourite pieces tend to come from the Georgian era. I recently saw a wonderful mahogany corner cabinet with an overhanging cornice containing two arched panelled doors and bracket feet. The original H-pattern brass hinges were intact too. For £550 it was a bargain to good to miss!

If you don’t have room for such large pieces of furniture, it is quite easy to find some smaller, more delicate, Georgian cabinets to fit your available space. Last week, on an antiques website, I noticed a lovely Chinoiserie cabinet on a stand from 1920. It has a gilded inlay and tea caddy fore edge on the top, two doors with wonderful panels in full Chinoiserie and an elaborate lock. The gorgeous scene on the panels depicts a temple, gardens and exotic birds in flight. The gables are walnut with gilded string inlay. It really is a joy to behold!

The doors are held on by three elaborate strap hinges and open to reveal a simple uninterrupted interior. The cabinet stands on a wonderful carved Queen Anne style base on carved cabriole legs finishing on carved curled feet. At a price of £1,250 this is another opportunity going begging. The problem with working with antiques is that there is a never ending stream of beautiful items and only so much room in the house. Not to matter. I will content myself for now with my current array of cabinets and let someone else enjoy this piece of Georgian wonder.

The world of antiques is like no other in the way in which it can offer so much excitement and opportunity each and every day to those involved, though getting started in the first place can be a task to say the least. Still, we’ve all got to start somewhere and nobody will ever move forward without asking questions, therefore the following is a brief summary of some of the most frequently asked examples by those approaching antique dealing for the first time:Is it possible to avoid being entirely ripped off?Yes, any truly reputable dealer will be so confident and proud of his or her products that they should essentially never hesitate in offering at least some form of a guarantee. This could be a trial period to examine the item or maybe even a buy-back scheme for the weeks and months to come.

Any tips on successful haggling?Again yes – the main one being to never get carried away and perhaps suggest $100 for something up for sale at $500. Offering prices far too low can offend the seller in an instant and rule out all possibilities of a resulting good deal. The same is also true for being too picky and pointing out each and every imperfection – the dealer will have already factored theses into the price. Instead, be honest and ask for a discount or lower price for a quick sale. Is it ok to alter or modify antiques?Assuming the piece is not of quite biblical historic significance or eye-watering value then yes, as it is perfectly possible that the newly designed piece with your own personal touch may in fact increase its value.

Is it true that antiques should never be kept in the company of kids?No – the myth that an dealer would be better to source the best house extensions north London has to offer and completely segregate their items is misleading. Face it; if a table or wardrobe has stood the tests of time for hundreds of year, chances are it will survive the odd household knock here and there.

I once had the opportunity of interacting with a painter Barnes who taught me a very important lesson. He was a very good painter. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that he was one of the best painters that I have ever seen and I can safely tell you that I have seen quite a large number of painters till date. The fact that I love collecting antiques compelled me to focus on old paintings as well. There were times when I felt that the quality of work of this painter in question was as good as the quality of work seen in antique paintings.

Well, he had the habit of starting work on a dozen canvases at a stretch. He then proceeded to compete them almost at the same time. When he was finished, he would simply stack all the paintings together in one big pile. As time went on, he would completely forget the fact that he had completed these paintings. He would someday conclude that he had mistakenly accumulated a large amount of junk and would dispose them off before proceeding on to the next project. The money that he would earn from selling his findings was not much because he would be disposing it presuming it to be junk.

So, what is the lesson here? If you are interested in purchasing antiques, the first and most important step is to take steps to store it properly. Improper storage is only going to complicate matters. The last thing you want is to lay your hand on a wonderful antique piece only to find that you just do not have the ability to finance the steps required to store it properly. You will be forced to dispose off the property and will just not be in a position to enjoy it to the fullest. Avoid this mistake and you cannot just buy antiques but can also store them properly.

Similar Posts:
Vegetarian Food Studio: Cardiff : Although you can always…
Visit The Country More : The country gets a bad rap. What steps should you take to enjoy better value for your property in the real estate market? Making use of house extensions north London service providers to increase the area of your house is one option. People will always be eager to pay more for a bigger house. However, this option will not work well at all times. Increasing the size of your house can lead to complications when selling the same.

If the house is too big for the average individual seeking a house in your area, chances are high that you will have to sell it at a reduced price just to get it off your hands. In such a scenario, adding antiques to your house can make a huge difference. Offering a fully furnished house and offering antique products to the new owner will definitely make a very good impression. The individual will come across the house as a property that has been designed and styled as if it is for a king. The funny thing is that you can charge more for the antique pieces that you purchased online and still et away with it.

While you would have just purchased the antique product, the person interested in buying your house would have seen how it makes a huge impact on the overall aesthetics of the house. One advantage of buying online is that you can explore a big market ranging from the traditional London antiques to the antiques imported from Egypt and other places. You can also create themes and make sure that the antiques you purchase are suitable for the various themes you have determined.

Another advantage of going in for antiques is that an ordinary cannot object will become extraordinary simply because it happens to be an old thing. As it grows older, and jewelry will get enhanced value despite the fact that it is not a contemporary product. This may seem like a contradiction in the market but that is how the antique section works.

I have been so bogged down recently with signing up to as many recruitment agencies as possible these last few week, as I am desperately trying to find a job and have been since I was made redundant over a year ago. Trying so hard to get a job, or even an interview for that matter has been really stressful and I had basically reached boiling point the other day, so I decided to treat myself to what I love to do best….rummaging through the local antique stores.

I know that rummaging through the local antique stores may not sound like a treat to everyone, but for me it really is a great way to relax and escape from all those day to day worries. I find that when I am in these quirky little antique stores, among all these unusual and interesting objects that are filled with history, I finally feel comforted.

Antique shops always have this musty old smell to them which makes me fell myself again, even if my whole world is falling apart. They are also always run by intriguing characters that natter away to you for hours, recalling times from days gone by and quite frankly I love it!!!

There is nothing more exciting than searching through piles of old stuff to discover a real treasure underneath it all. I have found so many great items in antique shops that make my home so much more interesting to look at and be in, I just can’t understand those people who say antique shops are filled with a load of old rubbish.

Whenever I am feeling down, I pick myself up and head off to the local antique shop, and once there the rest takes care of itself. The past times, the memories and the nostalgia, nothing could ever beat a good antique shop!

If you are a proud owner of a large and heavy piano, an ancient gramophone, or a vintage car, you possibly don’t need to understand a lot about how important it is to store these antiques appropriately. If you have just owned some antique items, such as artworks, furniture, a car, or something else or are planning to decorate your house with such prized possessions, it is definitely an article worth reading for protecting your antiques and collectibles.

The first and the most important aspect in making your storage related decisions is the selection of the most appropriate antique items for storage in various categories. These categories are based on the sensitivity of the items, fragility, effects of moisture, temperature, wear and tear and other storage conditions. It is an important aspect to consider because different types of antiques require different storage conditions. For instance, storage of antiquated furniture should be done in a moisture-free environment.

In addition, you should make sure that these antiques should be packed so that they do not get damaged. For example, you should limit their exposure to direct air, sun and heat. Air may cause passage of moisture and bacteria while heat and damage may end up changing their color undesirably. Similarly, if you are using packing belts for wrapping, their material should not be rusted or moist otherwise it may leave certain ugly marks on your antique items. Also, they should be transported with appropriate padding so that they do not get damaged even if the vehicle meets a road traffic accident.

You should also be careful about their regular cleaning and maintenance. These antique artworks, furniture or other items may become really prone to damage if you don’t keep them clean. It only requires some efforts in cleaning regularly, which is completely worth the time and efforts.

What does an antique store, Peru and cerebral palsy have in common? David Lucas, the one who has been running his antique store, aptly named 88 antiques for over 30 years now and he even lives above the store. He has always liked antique furniture and although today’s modern trends tend to sway what he has in stock, he does keep it mainly to his own personal tastes and preferences.

His favourite style is rustic country furniture, not the mass produced finely crafted stuff. He prefers the handmade, due to necessity; crafted out of whatever wood they had available at the time. This type of antique furniture is without a doubt completely unique and has a wonderful homely charm to it.

Recently Dave decided to do something different, he signed up for a five day trek through Peru, which started in the Urubamba Valley and finished in the lost city of Machu Picchu. This was something totally new for him and at the time he said ‘‘I’d never done anything like that before, I just had a desire to break the everyday sameness’. The trek through Peru was to help raise money for Scope and the trek itself managed to raise £130,000 for the charity whose work focuses on helping those with cerebral palsy.

There are many reasons why the illness occurs, but one of them can be attributed to birthing delivery or intensive care mistakes in special baby units. If this is the likely cause of the illness, then parents of the child are entitled to make a cerebal palsy claim for compensation. Many patients who are diagnosed with cerebral palsy require round the clock care and treatment; this is not something the NHS willingly provides free of charge, so a successful claim for compensation can help ease the burden of the medical costs.

Really what it boils down to is keeping your ears to the pavement as hen these paintings go on sale they are not always advertised. You certainly will not find them listed in the classified in your local newspapers.

In antique collection, desire is an important factor. The reason collectors desire an item may be because of age, scarcity, beauty and other forms of personal connections. Antique collection is growing with the emergence of several markets. The market is spreading everywhere including the internet. When I arrived in Glasgow last year, there was none on the way to my school. I recently discovered that they are now three in number. Now you see, people both young and old, going in from one shop to the other. Antique collection is for people in different economic classes of the society. Rich people usually collect expensive classics because they can afford it. However, you don’t have to be rich to collect but your affluence definitely affects what you collect.

While seeking information about Diesel Birmingham as I was about to make a trip there, I stumbled on an interesting article that claims that age and gender also determine what collectors go after. I really do not believe this since the persons making the claim did not base their opinion on any concrete research. They nevertheless claimed to have owned an antique shop for years. This is why they believe the experience of all those years is enough to make such claims. I am not saying they are wrong; they may be correct but it is hard to base antique collection on gender or any other demographic factor. People go for what they love, desire; what fascinates them and what they feel a connection or attachment to. Antiques collection is more about that than anything else.
